Are we plodding through life without pausing to consider where we’re headed? If we are, take a moment to reflect on a few questions that we might want to ask ourselves.
How many of us check in with ourselves to see how we are doing? What gives us a sense of being alive? Why don’t we do what we want to do?
Our changing perspectives are a part of life’s journey, but fear and anxiety eclipse our thoughts at every juncture for some of us. We bury them deep down with a ton of rocks for reasons best known to us.
We let the emotions smoulder until the insides begin to rumble, igniting the How’s, What’s, Why’s, and other questions!
Every day, asking insightful questions to ourselves provides opportunities for self-reflection. It opens up new experiences, gives our endeavours a purpose and true meaning to our lives. It also serves as a reminder of what we should be doing with our lives today for a better and happier tomorrow.
The question I asked myself went I moved back to India was, “If I had a choice today of HOW to live my life, WHAT would I do? Is that what I am doing now, and if not, WHY?”
I always knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life working for social causes rather than back in the corporate world. But how, what, and honestly why? I spent hours questioning my motives, to which I had no answers. I was irritated, frustrated, and anxious, and to make matters worse, I was consumed by the fear of failing and being judged, and I began to doubt myself. I could see myself living my dream, but I was terrified. Finally, I began to acknowledge my fear and allowed it to guide me in the direction I desired. As luck would have it, I met like-minded people, started small, focused on what I could control, and haven’t looked back since.
From that day forward, I would check in with myself from time to time to determine where I am currently in my life and if I’m heading in the right direction. In addition, it allowed for a better understanding of how much control I have over my life and actions.
Our lives, duties, responsibilities, goals, and dreams are different. Have an honest conversation with yourself to help you learn how to dedicate and realize them in a realistic and achievable order. Unravel all the negative thinking, let go of the fear factor, and approach challenges with a clear state of mind. As a result, we learn to face the realities of the possible and impossible.
We all have different questions to ask ourselves that provide us valuable insight. Asking and honestly responding to questions will help us know ourselves better, recognize the changes within and keep track of how we grow over time. We are constantly discovering new things about ourselves.
Here are a few questions of many others that I ask myself.
- Am I who I want to be? If not, why?
- How do I currently feel about myself?
- What makes me feel alive?
- What are my fears, and what holds me back?’
- What are the most important things to me in life?
- Am I investing in the right relationships?
- How has my life changed over the years? Was there a turning point in my life?
- Am I still holding on to something I need to let go of?
- Where am I not being honest with myself, and why?
- What am I grateful for?
- Am I taking anything for granted?
- How could I inspire others? How can I help one person today?
- What is my biggest weakness?
- How do I cope with stress?
- Am I good at being in the present moment?
- Do I believe every thought, I think?
If I don’t start asking myself these life-changing questions now, when will I?
There will be times when you are swallowed into the belly of the ocean, and the emotional storm will blow you off course. Sail the stormy weather by conquering your fears, anchoring your thoughts, and this will help you reconsider your sense of direction. This new perspective and approach will fill the sails and bring you ashore.
It’s like riding the crest of a wave when you start caring more about how your life feels rather than how it looks.
Nice thoughts, Sabita Menon. Happy to hear about your efforts, to do what you wanted to do, foregoing the perks of a well paid, corporate job. Equally delighted you chose to get back to India.
Thanks, Keshav. It was a big move but worth it!
