As a child, I loved reading fairy tales, and I continue to be in awe of them. They were captivating, gave me this unique ability to move beyond the world of reality and also believe was my reality.
The fairies and witches captured my imagination, and I believed they transformed into human forms in my life. This helped me deal with uncertainty and confusing thoughts. The good versus evil and the stories ending with ‘lived happily ever after’ assured me that everything will be alright in the end. These imaginary experiences continue to shape my life.
We are not here to critique fairy tales but to share our favourite tale.
I have many favourites but the one tale that I loved was ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. The turmoil, conquest, act of kindness and valour captivated my attention, and the magic words ‘Fee-fi-fo-fum’ had an unusual power over me. I felt anything is possible and took me through a roller coaster of emotions.
As a child, the words, “Once upon a time” always built excitement and anticipation to the fantastical world of fairy tales and ending with, “happily ever after” was a positive note on victory of the good over evil. I fondly remember my story telling sessions with my little sister. My stories were never the original versions but reflected my wild imagination of good and evil characters based on fairy tales and other fantasy story books. There was no binding logic to the stories, which didn’t matter because by humanizing the characters, we both felt a part of something bigger than ourselves.
These irresistible fairy tales always swept me away on a magic carpet. The reading experience of the intriguing tales will forever be a special genre in my life. Fairy tales are timeless!
